The Almoravids founded the first part of this complex in the year 1070, as a gesture to the emperor of the city of Marrakech. At the beginning of the 12th Century, Ali Ibn Yusuf installed here a system of water canals, paved the streets, and constructed the great mosque here. In 1127, a great wall measuring 9 km was built around the city.

During the reign of the Almohades, the walls protecting Marrakech helped the city prosper, and it thus became the most important muslim city in the Western world.

Inside the Citadel, you can observe two main doors: Bab Agnaou (Doors of the bull with no horns), and Bab Rob. You can also see the big fountains of the Agdal Garden.
