The main highways in Morocco, especially those of the north and the northwest, are in good condition, all throughout the year. Inland, south of Atlas Mountains, travelling by car is more difficult, especially in winter when the climate changes quite considerably in these mountainous areas. To get to Marrakech by car from Europe, the quickest and most comfortable way is to take a ferry from Tarifa or Algeciras to Tanger, Morocco. From Tanger, the motorway is of high quality and not used much in winter. This highway goes all the way to Marrakech.
The highway passes by the towns and cities of Asilah, Larache, Kenitra, Rabat, Casablanca, and finally after driving 600 kilometers, you will arrive in Marrakech.
Be very careful with the speed limits, as there are many Moroccan police controlling the speed limit, especially around cities.
The rules for driving in Morocco are very similar to those of Europe, although you will notice a lack of signals and roadside information, especially in the northern part, and also in the smaller cities. |
