Marrakech of Morocco, Africa is one of the most prestigious and emblematic capitals of the old Moroccan empire. The city of a thousand and one nights, it´s a mythical and mystical place. It´s a meeting place for adventurers in search of strange and bewildering experiences. "Initially it´s shocking, but after a while it grabs hold of you", remarked Fernando Pessoa, in his travel journals, whilst visiting Marrakesh.
The ambience of Marrakesh Morocco will overwhelm you; the exotic smells, the frantic colors, the sounds of pulsating music; Marrakech could be described as the “essence” of charm. It´s constantly changing. Like most other cosmopolitan cities (Paris, New York etc), Marrakesh town is a true urban chameleon.
Marrakesh dates back to the 10th Century. Back then, all that was there was the Medina. Over the centuries, it was transformed into an imperial city; a place of residence envied by all. It became known as “the Pearl of the south”.
The city was first named Marrakesh, which means “go with speed!”. This was perhaps, some kind of an error. Nowadays, people come here to chill out and relax. Some people even stay here for good - decide not to return. Between the soucs, the shaded streets are lined with musicians, writers, snake charmers, voyeurs, salespeople and travelling acrobats who perform in the exotic Place Jemaa el Fna.
At the time of the Almohade Dynasty, Marrakesh was the most important Moslem city in the west. The capital cities of Magreb and d´Al Andalus prospered mainly because of Saharan trade. Their location, in a depression between the Atlantic coast, the High Atlas mountains, and Casablanca and Rabat is one of great strategic importance.
Added to the list of "Patrimoine Mondial" by UNESCO, Marrakesh is must for any visitor.
